Ramseur Arrested on Rape Charge
By GARY LANGER
Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK (AP) - James Ramseur, one of the four teen-agers shot by
Bernhard Goetz on a subway train, was arrested Friday on charges of
raping and robbing a young woman on a roof landing last month,
authorities said.
Police arrested Ramseur, 18, after the victim - who was hospitalized
for four days after the attack - identified him in a lineup at the
48th Precinct in the Bronx, law enforcement sources told The
Associated Press.
Bronx District Attorney Mario Merola, who announced the arrest, said
in a statement that Ramseur allegedly accosted the 18-year-old victim
in an elevator in her building at the Claremont Houses, a Bronx
housing project.
Ramseur, who lives in another building in the same project,
allegedly forced the young woman to a landing leading to the roof of
the building, raped her, took her earrings and three rings, and fled,
Merola said.
A source close to the investigation said police were seeking a
second man said to have participated in the attack. The source also
said a gun allegedly was used in the attack.
Ramseur was one of the youths wounded by Goetz in a widely
publicized shooting on Dec. 22. Goetz, 37, said he fired in
self-defense as the four youths menaced him, but the four said they
were only panhandling for money.
A initial grand jury refused to indict Goetz for shooting the
youths, but a second grand jury impaneled on the basis of new
evidence indicted him on charges including attempted murder and
assault. An appeals court refused to dismiss that indictment
Thursday.

Goetz 'Not Surprised' By Arrest Of Subway Teen
NEW YORK (AP) - Subway gunman Bernhard Goetz ''is not surprised''
one of the four teen-agers he shot on a Manhattan subway has been
charged in the brutal rape and robbery of a young woman last month,
Goetz's attorney says.
James Ramseur Jr. was held on $20,000 bail following his arraignment
Friday night in Bronx Criminal Court, said Senior Court Clerk Coleman
King.
The most serious charges against Ramseur, rape and robbery, carry
prison terms of up to 25 years upon conviction.
Police arrested Ramseur, 18, after the victim - who was hospitalized
for four days after the May 5 attack - identified him in a lineup,
law enforcement sources told The Associated Press.
''Mr. Goetz is not surprised by the fact that one of those that
accosted him in the subway and put him in fear of his life is alleged
to have continued his brutality against others,'' lawyer Barry
Slotnick said Friday.
District Attorney Mario Merola said Ramseur allegedly accosted the
18-year-old victim at gunpoint in an elevator in her building at a
Bronx housing project, forced the young woman to a landing leading to
the roof, raped her and took her earrings and three rings.
